We have fulfilled a dream with the thorough renovation of our Gmachje in Findeln. We were driven by our ambition to preserve old Valais traditions, rebuild sustainably and make them accessible to others. And now we feel very lucky to be able to share this magical place with others. We put our heart and soul, our visions and resources into creating our holiday home in the mountains – and it’s all been so worthwhile! The concept is focussed around nature, respect, joy, instinctive trust, security and love.

Evolution

Gmachje is a very old typical Valais word that refers to a smaller building, constructed in the traditional style. The typical construction method of the Upper Valais barns and granaries included stilts with stone discs to protect against mice, larch wood containing high levels of resin to make it resistant to pests, and heavy stone tiles on the roof.

There are about as many different names for these quaint old houses as there are dialects. In the old Zermatt dialect, the name is written as follows: Gmachchje

Building documentation

Our Gmachje was once used by Grandma (Omi) May’s family as a cowshed. Our Omi May used to make the long journey down from Findeln to the village to go to school. The somewhat larger Gmachje opposite served as the family’s living quarters. Today, both of the buildings are used for holidays and retreats.

Sustainability

Our traditional Gmachje has been rebuilt with original materials wherever possible. It was important for us to preserve the original charm, to restore as much as possible of what was originally used. We were supported by true masters, who understood our vision and worked with us to realise our dream. And we are full of gratitude and pride when we see the result.
Up here in Findeln, in this beautiful corner of Earth, you are one with nature, and can benefit from its power and the energy – and this is a secret we are happy to share.

At the same time, we have a strong sense of our responsibility. We want to make sure we give something back to nature, and leave something beautiful for future generations.
